Frequently asked questions

Money

Does the price go up after the first year?

Not on these plans. $40, $45, and $50 are locked for five years — longer than your lease, and longer than most people stay in one apartment here. The catch is real but small: it requires autopay from a stored bank account (a debit or credit card does not qualify for the same rate) and paperless billing.

What will the bill actually say?

The plan price plus taxes and fees, which vary by municipality. We will not print a fake all-in number here because it differs between Champaign and Urbana. Ask on the call and we will tell you the real figure before you agree to anything.

Is there an equipment rental fee?

No. The WiFi gateway is included on all three internet tiers. You can use your own router if you prefer, but you are not paying extra for theirs.

Will I have to pay a deposit?

Sometimes, depending on the credit check result. If a deposit comes back on your account we will tell you the amount before anything is ordered, and we will talk you through whether NOW Internet is the better route.

What is the cheapest option, honestly?

Per household: NOW Internet from $30, or Internet Essentials under $15 if your household is income-qualified. Per person: the 1 Gig at $50 split four ways is $12.50 each, which beats both. That is the whole argument for splitting it.

Setup & timing

How early should I order before move-in?

About two weeks. Late August is the single busiest install window of the year in this town — every lease on the same block turns over in the same seven days. The move-in timeline on the student page will work the dates backward from your date.

Will a technician have to come inside?

Often not. Many Campustown buildings are already wired, which means a self-install kit and about twenty minutes. Older houses sometimes need a line pulled. We check which one you are before the order goes in, so you are not surprised by a truck roll.

How long does it take to get connected?

A self-install is usually a few days out. A technician visit depends on the schedule, which in August can stretch. This is the reason to call early rather than the week you arrive.

What if I am not in town on install day?

A roommate over 18 can be there instead, as long as they are on the lease and can let the technician in. Tell us on the call and we will note it on the order.

Something broke and it is 9pm on a Sunday.

Comcast support runs around the clock and is the fastest path for an outage — we are closed Sundays and after 5pm, so at 9pm they are your move.

Where we help is the part that is not an outage: a router in the wrong room, a dead spot in the back bedroom, a billing line nobody can explain. Bring it to the store Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Call ahead on (217) 722-8661 — appointments are strongly encouraged, and it means someone is waiting for you instead of mid-repair on someone else's laptop.

Roommates & leases

Whose name goes on the account?

One person's. That person is legally responsible for the bill, which is why the fair arrangement is that they collect from everyone else on the first of the month.

Pick the roommate staying longest on the lease. If that person leaves mid-year, the account can be transferred — bring both people and an ID to the store and it takes a few minutes.

Can Xfinity bill each roommate separately?

No. It is one account, one bill, one router for the unit. Splitting happens between you — most houses use a shared payment app and settle up monthly.

A roommate moved out and stopped paying. Now what?

The account holder still owes Comcast. Two practical options: transfer the account to whoever remains, or downgrade the tier so the smaller household pays less. Both are things we can walk you through at the store.

What happens when the lease ends in May?

No contract, no early-termination fee. Cancel it, or move the service to your next address. If you are back in August, transferring is usually less hassle than cancelling and starting over — and it keeps your locked price.

My building says internet is included. Do I still need this?

Probably not, and we will tell you that. Some buildings include a basic shared connection that is fine for one person and miserable for four; some have an exclusive provider arrangement that means you cannot switch at all. Send us the building name and we will tell you honestly which situation you are in.

Eligibility & who we are

Do I need a credit check?

Comcast runs one for standard accounts. If that is a problem — no credit history yet, or an international student without a Social Security number — ask about NOW Internet, which is prepaid and skips it. We would rather send you there than watch you get declined on a phone call.

I am an international student. Can I still get service?

Yes. Bring your passport and I-20 or visa documentation to the store and we will work out which product you qualify for. This is a conversation that goes much better in person than over the phone.

Do I qualify for Internet Essentials?

It is limited to income-qualified households, and being a student does not by itself qualify you. If you participate in certain assistance programs you may be eligible. Ask us and we will check rather than let you apply and get rejected.

Are you Comcast?

No. Tech Ed Solutions is an authorized Xfinity retailer — an independently owned local business at 605 North Neil Street, Suite A, in Champaign, not Comcast. We are authorized to sell and set up Xfinity service, and we handle repairs and support for everything else. Xfinity and Comcast are trademarks of Comcast Corporation.

Why go through you instead of xfinity.com?

Same plans, same prices. The difference is that when something goes wrong in October there is an address on Neil Street where a person is standing, and they already know your account. If you would rather order online, that is genuinely fine — we will still tell you which plan fits your building.

What do you do with my information?

We use it to look up availability at your address and call you back. It is not sold or shared. We never collect payment details through this website — if a page ever asks you for a card number, it is not ours.

Still have a question?

Ask a person.

Send it here or call the store. If the answer is “this plan is wrong for your building,” we will say that.

  • A local person calls you, not a call center
  • We say no if a plan is wrong for your building
  • Your information is not sold or shared
